Charleston House
and The Wine Lands of Sussex
interiors of Charleston House
Saturday 22nd October
An aesthetic and flavourful adventure into Sussex last weekend as we visited Charleston House, the home of the Bloomsbury group artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant beautifully decorated by their owners, every corner of the house is tastefully patterned and embellished preserving the unique spirit of the place and its owners.
It was the arena for artistic pursuits, bold discussions and the unconventional private lives of its owners and their close friends. We got a glimpse into that life through a special exhibition of Grant’s very private drawings.
After a tour of the house and a stroll in the surrounding garden, we ventured towards Artelium, one of the region’s youngest yet most innovative and creative vineyards.
In the words of Vanessa Bell’s sister, Virgina Woolf “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” We, therefore, had to ensure to dine exceptionally well at the vineyard and pair the lunch with local wines which definitely powered our thinking and the flowing and bubbling conversations that followed.
After the sunset and tour of the vineyard and our return to London, we did indeed sleep well after such an eventful day.
Sussex, U.K.
