Cosmic House
April 12th, 2022
Located in Holland Park, Cosmic House is the UK's first postmodern house to be awarded Grade I listed status. This unique property encompasses a manifesto of postmodernism and was the brainchild of Charles Jencks, the architect and design theorist who began designing it with his wife Maggie Keswick in the late seventies, the decade he published his landmark book, The Language of Post-Modern Architecture.
The house encapsulates Jencks’s ideas about architectural design such as ‘adhocism’, which makes the case for the joy of improvisation. The interiors are sprinkled with elements of the absurd and surreal, and the house takes us back into the eighties and offers an insight into the mind of an architectural genius.
The tour was followed by a special lunch at 6 Portland, where we discussed all things architecture and design.
